O X F O R D  C I N E M A  &  C A F E

A century of cinema, freshly brewed.

Tucked away on Magdalen Street, The Oxford Cinema has been Oxford’s go-to spot for film magic since 1924. It first opened as the Oxford ‘Super’ Cinema with a bang (and a bit of silent drama), screening The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse starring the iconic Rudolph Valentino. With its grand French Renaissance design, impressive murals by artist G. Rushton, and seating for over 1,000 film lovers, it was a place to be wowed — and still is.

In 1930, it made history as the first cinema in Oxford to show a talking picture, kicking off a long legacy of firsts, favourites, and unforgettable nights out. Over the years, the cinema evolved under various names — Super Cinema, ABC, Cannon, MGM, and Odeon — all while keeping its classic charm and loyal audiences.

After a brief curtain call in 2023, we gave this beauty the encore it deserves. Reopened as The Oxford Cinema & Cafe, it now blends nearly a century of rich history with a fresh focus on community, creativity, and comfort. We show everything from new releases to timeless favourites, host unique events, and serve great coffee and bites in our foyer cafe.

Whether you're here for the popcorn, the history, the stories on screen — or just a really good flat white — welcome to your neighbourhood cinema, reimagined.
